Year 9 Spent Some Time Polishing Their Artistic Abilities
A lot of our students shine when it comes to putting paint to paper or making their thoughts sketches. Our art teachers as well the head of art have strived to better their skills every day and their abilities have only grown over the years. Taking it a step further, we decided to give them some inspiration as well by taking a trip down to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery. Our plan for the day was to take a tour of the gallery and then head down to the Scotland Street School Museum for the competition we were planning on entering.
Our Visit To Glasgow
The students had already been planning for months and had all the talent they needed, but some last minute inspiration was the final touch. The museum and gallery were both pretty close to each other as they are both in Glasgow. We managed to hit two birds with one stone! 2018 is the 150th anniversary of the famous Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It was the best time to head to the gallery and get a few ideas from his work.
Visiting An Art Exhibition
There was also a temporary exhibition that we got to see to celebrate the man that is known as Glasgow’s ‘greatest cultural icon.’ This exhibition has a range of different furniture, glass and paintings from his collection. There were about 250 in total, most of which had not been seen in Glasgow for about 30 years. This was a great opportunity and we had great timing! We also took a tour of the gallery and spent some time looking through art from ancient Egypt.

The Art Competition
After this, we headed down to the Scotland Street School Museum. Here, the children participated in the Annual Art competition. Children up to the age of sixteen are allowed to participate. Overall it was a fairly productive day and we even came home with a few prizes. The children got the motivation they needed to continue working on their artistic talents. We learned a lot too! After getting a quick bite to eat and re-energizing ourselves for a while, we headed back down to the school. The winners of the competition got honourable mentions in assembly.
It was a long day, but we all had a lot of fun!
